Beyond Me Awards

Do you know someone who exemplifies a “Beyond Me” life, someone who is always putting God and others ahead of self? Would you like to honor that person? If so, please email us via the “contact” page of this website and send me a photo of that person, along with a 250 words or less summary of that person’s selfless life. If we post that person’s picture and information, we will send you a copy of Beyond Me as a thank-you gift.

Kathi Macias presented the first annual Beyond Me award at the Golden Scrolls Award Banquet in St. Louis on June 27 to Rebekah Montgomery.
Rebekah Montgomery is an amazing woman of God who came to know Jesus as her personal Savior when she was only three years old. Not long after that, she felt compelled to share the gospel with anyone who would listen, so she was often found preaching to her congregation of barnyard cats, pleading with them to accept Jesus before it was too late. By the time she was 13, she was teaching Sunday school, Children’s Church, and Bible studies in an inner-city congregation.

At 17, she married her high school sweetheart, and they were soon involved in fulltime ministry, but several family tragedies, including the death of a baby to Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, broke her health and forced her to rest and recuperate. It was then that her writing talents began to surface, as she poured out her grief on paper.

Since then, writing assignments, speaking, and study have taken her to exotic ports-of-call — Argentina, the West Bank of Palestine, Canada, Haiti, the Dominican Republic. In 2002, she and her husband took doctorate level Bible classes at Jerusalem University College. Her husband then returned home, but she stayed in Israel as a guest of the Ministry of Tourism, one of a group of Christian journalists so honored. This was her second study sabbatical in Israel. The Ministry of Tourism sponsored another tour in 2005, and she has also traveled Israel on her own.

Both she and her husband make it a practice to join and be actively involved in a local evangelical church wherever they happen to be living. At present, she is teaching two women's Bible study groups at Northwoods Community Church, but she also frequently speaks in other churches of various denominations. Those of us who know and love her are never surprised to find her off in a corner somewhere, praying with someone in distress, or helping to clean up after some meeting or other.

It was a great honor to present the first annual Beyond Me award to Rebekah Montgomery for her humble modeling of a you-first life in a me-first world! You can find out more about Rebekah at http://RebekahMontgomery.com.

Valley Pickren is an advocate for the disabled and helps them find the programs to help make their lives more manageable.

***She has put her needs on the back burner whenever a friend calls and needs her help.

***She gives of her time and minimal resources with no strings attached.

***She is a no-nonsense kind of person.... so don't try to lie to her because she can smell a lie a mile away!

***She was personally responsible for helping us gain custody of our granddaughter by going to pick her up from a questionable home life. We are forever grateful for that!

Congratulations, Valley, and thank you Cindy, for bringing this "beyond me" lady to our attention. We are honored to know you both.
